Michael J. Hawkins, M.D., a medical oncologist, is the Chief Medical Officer at American Bioscience, Inc., a small privately held pharmaceutical company in Santa Monica, CA, that is developing new formulations of anticancer drugs. Formally, Dr. Hawkins was an Associate Director of the Washington Cancer Institute at the Washington Hospital Center (1999 to 2002); the Director of the Clinical Research and Developmental Therapeutics Program at the Lombardi Cancer Center (1992 to 1999); and the Chief of the Investigational Drug Branch while at the National Cancer Institute (1984 to 1992). He was the chairman of the Cancer Advisory Panel to the National Institutes of Health's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine from 2000 to 2002 and has served on advisory panels to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In his oncology practice he encouraged patients to pursue inner healing while being treated for their cancer.
